Alexandria's current City Hall was built in 1871, after a fire destroyed the original hall built in 1817. The steepled clock tower is a reconstruction of the original one designed by Benjamin Latrobe and contrasts with the buildings Second Empire style.
The buildings entrance faces Market Square, which houses a Farmer's Market early on Saturday mornings--a tradition dating back centuries.
City Hall used to house a courthouse, masons lodge and police and fire stations. Today it's dedicated to city government, including the city council.
