Sure, getting to the Great White Way from Philly is easy enough. But with the Walnut Street Theatre in town, theater buffs can keep themselves quite busy seeing all the Broadway-caliber shows that grace its stage. America's oldest continuously operated theater -- it opened in 1809 -- the Walnut has, in recent years, become known for its top-notch productions of favorites like 'Biloxi Blues,' 'The Philadelphia Story' and 'Annie.' The Walnut is also devoted to maintaining the vitality of the local theater scene, which means they cast Philadelphia-based actors first before opening up auditions to out-of-town performers. The Walnut inspires devotion in its audiences as well: It currently has the largest subscription audience of any regional theater in the world. (Clearly the Walnut's audiences like what they see.) All these theatergoers no doubt also appreciate the Walnut's accessible location just off Washington Square, which makes it convenient to dine at nearby restaurants, many of which offer pre-theater menus.
