Lovingly described by its creators as ''our great cardboard cathedral of Giant Puppets,'' the one-room Living Loft of Spiral Q is all that and more. On the second floor of a nondescript two-story walk-up, it houses a fair amount of the work created by Spiral Q and its students since the community-based arts organization was formed in 1996. The place is a living work that changes as new projects are added. Whimsical? Certainly. But because Spiral Q specializes in teaching the elements of puppetry (toy theater, mask-making, cardboard headgear, street theater) to foster performance, community participation and peaceful protest, giant-head versions of local political figures can be seen among the stick puppets, puff-n-stuff reptiles and larger-than-life people of every color. Other items stem from various combinations of papier-mch, cardboard sculpting, fabric and paint. See the enormous, yellow-faced mustachioed gentleman (or is that corporate scoundrel?) staring down from the rafters, complete with gray tux and white shoes. - Jenn Carbin
