If you're new to antiquing and nervous about the rules, or if you feel you've been taken hostage by Pottery Barn and Pier 1, you should try paying a visit to this store, the place for antiques without attitude. "We have a very eclectic clientele," says the store's buyer, Todd Belfield. "But everyone seems new to buying antiques and looking for comfort and ease. In fact, this is where many people make their very first purchase."

Located on U Street, away from the high-end shops of Georgetown and Bethesda, you won't see many Jaguars parked out front. The store has the feel of a well-kept warehouse, with warm, low lighting and soft music. There is a wide display of mostly 19th-century American pieces, alongside a few architectural artifacts.

"We have a very large turnover," says Belfield. "We like to keep things moving and our customers like that, too." Here you will find a velvet Victorian sofa for only $950. There are a number of different 19th-century cherry and maple wood dressers, tables, wash stands and church benches to choose from, all reasonably priced. Goodwood makes antiques buying a low-stress activity.
