One of the great pleasures of living in a city like Washington is that the world comes to your doorstep. You can enjoy treasures like Lisner Auditorium, located on the George Washington University campus. This spacious hall, with excellent acoustics, is the home-away-from-home for music, dance and more from around the world. Everything from the formal-dress classics to the biggest stand-up comedy acts on the circuit play here; in fact, one of Eddie Murphy's comedy concerts was filmed here. Expect to see such diverse acts as the Afro-Cuban All Stars, Japanese dance Sankai Juku and New York swing music from the '40s. Some street parking is available, but your best bet is Metro (about three blocks away) or the University Visitor Garage on I Street at 22nd Street NW.

Patrons tend to be younger, but because of the wide appeal of the different acts, university students aren't the only ones in the audience. -- Brad Marshall
