Renowned for their patriotism, members of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) promote respect for American heritage and knowledge of American political and social institutions and history. With chapters in all 50 states and abroad, DAR maintains its headquarters in Washington. Although its primary building forms an imposing front on 17th Street NW, the DAR public building, which includes the museum, gift shop and library, is around the corner at 1776 D St. NW. Its Constitution Hall, which forms part of the DAR compound, is available to the public for concerts, graduations and other special group occasions.

The museum, accredited by the American Association of Museums, has a gallery of several adjoining rooms that offers periodic small exhibits. The second-floor Americana Room holds the DAR collection of both American manuscripts and printed material and DAR archival materials. The museum and the associated Period Rooms and the Americana Room are free and open to the public.

DAR has also gathered an imposing collection of books, many devoted to genealogical research, in keeping with members' interest in preserving family history. There are also historical records of state and local sites, church histories and records, and other vital data valuable to researchers and genealogists. The library contains more than 150,000 titles and its catalog is available online at http://dar.library.net.
