Built in 1928, this graceful example of Jazz Age civic architecture (designed by John C. Austin, Albert C. Martin, Sr., and John and Donald Parkinson, with stunning interiors by Austin Whittlesey) was the only pre-WWII Los Angeles building allowed to exceed the citys earthquake- conscious height limit of 150 feet. As a result, the 28-story landmark reigned as LAs tallest building for over thirty years. Memorably decapitated in the 1953 sci-fi classic 'War of the Worlds,' City Hall was dealt some serious actual damage by 1994s Northridge quake; thankfully, the city opted to make the necessary repairs and the building is once again open to the public. -- Dan Epstein
